Undeterred by lockdown, Girvan Men’s Shed members have been working hard on a garden to enhance the entrance of Girvan Football Club’s Hamilton Park.
Funding from Falck Renewables Assel Valley Wind Farm helped the Shedders as they’re known, to progress the project, working in partnership with several local groups and businesses to overcome the hurdles presented by the pandemic.
Grants Whisky Coopers donated barrels, South Ayrshire Council’s recycling team supplied compost and Girvan Football Club supplied equipment, transport and manpower for deliveries.
David Young, Girvan Men’s Shed project manager, highlighted some of the benefits of the ongoing work: “This project showcases the many skills of our volunteers who are mostly retired. They have a new reason to get up in the mornings. We’ve even extended from our initial one day a week meeting to five days a week. It’s almost like being back at work!”
The garden will provide a calm safe space for disabled football fans and their carers visiting the park for games. On non-match days the garden will be able to be enjoyed by local groups around Girvan.
