The wind farm is located in the hills north of Invergarry and southwest of Fort Augustus and Invermoriston. The land belongs to the Achlain and Aberchalder Estates, and is currently used for grazing and sporting purposes. Land cover is dominated by heather moorland with areas of grassland, sedges, and reeds in wetter areas and alpine plant communities towards the summits.
Following detailed monitoring of the wind resource, electrical connection studies, environmental studies and the impact on local communities, Millennium was recognised as an ideal location for a wind farm. After carrying out, and submitting extensive environmental assessment work, planning permission was granted by the Highland Council in June 2006.
The first phase of the wind farm consisted of 16 turbines and associated infrastructure with an extension of 4 similar turbines added during the building of the first phase of the project which was completed in 2009. The 20 turbines, which each produce up to 2500 kW of electrical power, are up to 125 m high from the base to the highest point of the blade. The wind farm generates enough clean, green electricity to supply around 27900 homes and help reduce reliance on existing less environmentally-friendly energy resources.
It is estimated that the wind farm displaces between 48600 & 115000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year which would otherwise have been produced by a power station burning fossil fuel.
The wind farm is owned by Millennium Wind Energy Limited (MWEL) part of the Falck Renewables Group. In March 2014, CII Holdco Ltd, part of Copenhagen Infrastructure I K/S, acquired 49% of MWEL from the Falck Renewables Group. The project was developed by RDC Scotland in association with West Coast Energy Limited. Construction began in June 2006 when the initial phase of civil engineering work consisted of road building to create the access route to and foundations for a new 132 kV sub-station which was required to export the generated energy into the National Grid. This work was undertaken by RJ McLeod, a Dingwall based construction company.
Nordex AG was appointed as the Turnkey Contractor for the supply and construction of the wind farm. RJ McLeod was appointed by Nordex as the civil engineering contractor for the construction of the remaining roads, crane pads and foundations. Hydro Contracting (Evanton) was appointed as the Electrical Infrastructure Contractor. The turbines were manufactured in Germany then shipped to three Scottish ports (Kyle of Lochalsh, Corpach & Invergordon). Onward transportation from the three ports to site was undertaken by specialist road haulage contractors.
In order to connection to the National Grid, Scottish & Southern Energy have constructed a new, indoor 132 kV electricity sub-station, and a short section of wood pole overhead power line to connect to the existing nearby 132 kV circuit.
A 6 turbine extension to the wind farm was granted permission in 2009 and construction work was completed early 2011, bringing the overall wind farm up to 26 turbines.

Falck completed construction of what was the UK’s largest onshore wind farm on 31 March 2005. It was officially opened on the 16th of June 2005 by Mr. Andrew Davies, the Welsh Assembly Government’s Minister for Economic Development and Transport at the time. The Cefn Croes project is owned by the Falck Renewables Wind Ltd through its subsidiary, Cambrian Wind Energy Limited (CWEL) and is located near Devils Bridge, Wales, 15 km east of Aberystwyth. Cefn Croes has a capacity of 58.5 MW (39 x 1.5 MW GE 1.5 Series) and will save the equivalent of between 56,883 and 134,674 tonnes of CO2 annually and generate enough electricity to supply approximately 32,710 homes. In March 2014, CII Holdco Ltd, part of Copenhagen Infrastructure I K/S, acquired 49% of CWEL from the Falck Renewables Group.

This wind farm helps Wales to play its part in the campaign to combat climate change by producing around 14 % of wind energy in Wales and will contribute towards the Welsh Assembly Government’s target energy from renewable sources for 2020.

The wind farm consists of 12 turbines with tower heights of 55 m and 27 turbines with a 65 m tower height. The rotor speed is 11 – 22 rpm. The rotor diameter is 70 m.

Planning Consent for the project was awarded in May 2002 and the construction contract was signed in March 2004 and the project was operational 1 April 2005. General Electric (GE) supplied the wind turbines and managed the overall implementation of the project.

The project gave on-site employment to more than 100 people during the construction period with the main civil works competed by the Welsh contractor, Jones Brothers of Ruthin. Full commercial operations began in April 2005 and GE Energy continues to operate and maintain the turbines under contract to Cambrian Wind Energy.

Boyndie wind farm is located on a former World War II airfield around 2 km inland from the north coast of Aberdeenshire, between Portsoy and Banff. The land at the airfield is flat and well drained. Many of the airfield runways and access tracks are still intact, providing excellent access to the site. After carrying out, and submitting extensive environmental assessment, planning permission was granted in July 2004 by the Aberdeenshire Council for the first phase of the project consisting of 7 turbines and a single turbine extension was added which was operational in 2010.
The wind farm has a total of 8 turbines and can generate up to 16.65 MW of electricity. That is enough clean, green energy to supply around 9,100 homes – roughly equal to all the homes in Banff, Whitehills, Portsoy and all the nearby rural areas.
The wind farm is owned and operated by Boyndie Wind Energy Limited (BWEL), part of the Falck Renewables Group. In March 2014, CII Holdco Ltd, part of Copenhagen Infrastructure I K/S, acquired 49% of BWEL from the Falck Renewables Group. The wind farm began generating electricity in June 2006. The turbines were built and installed by the German company Enercon GmbH.
The turbines are Enercon E-70 E4 which is a variable pitch and variable speed machine which directly drives an electric generator (ie has no gearbox). The rotor diameter is 71 m and the height of the tower is 64 m.
The turbines are maintained under a long term contract with Enercon. Each turbine is monitored 24 hours a day seven days a week and any maintenance is carried out by specially trained and qualified technicians. The availability of the project is warranted by Enercon and the safe, efficient, reliable and clean generation of electricity is a fundamental requirement under our contract with Enercon.
The wind turbines start generating electricity at wind speeds of about 3 m/s and generate their maximum output at 13 m/s. but will continue to generate safely at wind speeds to 28 m/s.
