Last week we had the pleasure of welcoming Fraserburgh Academy‘s S3 Girls in Energy to our Boyndie Wind Farm.

They were accompanied by their lecturer from North East Scotland College, who runs an all-girl energy course at Fraserburgh Academy, promoting the opportunities available in science, technology, engineering and maths-related careers. Our Site Manager Bruce Hosie, Asset Manager Jamie Steel and Community Relations Manager Erin Murchie were on hand to talk about the wind farm and answer questions about Renewable Energy.

It’s always a delight to provide youngsters with the opportunity to experience our wind farms firsthand and inspire them. We look forward to creating more experiences like this in the future.

Funds awarded from Hennøy Wind Park in Norway has enabled community association, Svelgen Opp og Fram, to plan new facilities at a local bathing spot. This is just one of the projects funded this month, marking the third distribution of funds from the Hennøy Wind Association this year.

Hennøy Wind Park, in Bremanger, was developed by Renantis Norway AS (formerly Falck Renewables Norway AS). The wind farm provides tax revenues to the state and municipality, but it also offers direct support to the local population through a fund managed by the Hennøy Wind Association. This association has an independent board consisting of representatives from the local community and distributes funds provided by Hennøy Wind Park.

Svelgen Opp og Fram has worked voluntarily to build toilet facilities at the popular bathing spot Mevika in Svelgen, but there was a significant shortfall in the funds needed to complete the project. Thanks to the funds awarded by the Hennøy Wind Association, the facilities project can be completed.

In addition, the association awarded other community projects with funds, some of which will provide equipment and learning opportunities for children and young people in the local area.

Renantis has wind parks in several European countries, including Italy, the United Kingdom, Spain, France, Finland, and Sweden, where funds are also provided to local communities in a similar way to Hennøy Wind Park. The association receives contributions from the wind parks throughout the lifetime of the facilities.

“When we develop a wind park, we consider both the environment and social, technical, and economic factors to ensure that we can deliver a project that contributes to our purpose – to build a better future for all, by supplying energy to people’s daily powering people’s everyday lives, with care.

“We are committed to sharing our values with communities around our wind parks in various ways. Establishing local funds is a great way to show communities that they share in these values,” says Marco Asprone, CEO of Renantis Norway AS.

D’où viens-tu ?

Vitry-la-Ville

Where are you from?

Vitry-la-Ville

What made you want to study renewable energy?

It was for me a professional sector too little known and where training was rare. In the case of methanisation, it directly combines my passion for agriculture with my curiosity about this fast-developing sector. Current energy trends are moving strongly towards renewables energies, which makes me want to work in this promising field. In the case of agriculture, this offers a significant source of diversification for farmers who are able to produce biomass. That’s what made me decide to go down this route and continue my studies.

How did the financial support from Renantis help your studies?

The Renantis programme helped me with my day-to-day living expenses, especially for the trips, for me by car that I had to buy. As an apprentice, the moments between trainings at school and work in the company are synonymous of a lot of mileage.

What are your career plans for the future?

I intend to continue down the path of methanisation, which has been developing strongly in our farming region over the last few years. My ambition is to become plant manager, and why not, if the opportunity arises, take my turn in this wonderful way of producing energy for the future.

Comment candidater

b. Les projets retenus doivent :

  • Etre situés sur une commune accueillant l’une de nos centrales opérationnelles d’énergie renouvelable ;
  • Etre opérationnels d’ici 2025 (préférentiellement en 2024) ;
  • Etre soutenus par toute entité ayant autorité pour la réalisation du projet ;
  • Pouvoir démontrer un impact positif dans la lutte contre le changement climatique ou l’atténuation de ses effets ;

  • Une vue d’ensemble des actions entreprises ;
  • Des études de cas montrant comment le financement aide votre territoire à prendre des mesures en faveur du climat ;
  • Des illustrations et photos ;

2. I progetti proposti dovranno:

In 2023 we experienced the hottest summer since we started keeping records of global temperatures in 1880 according to NASA’s Goddard Institute of Space Studies and Copernicus European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). This is part of a trend driven mainly by human-related greenhouse gas emissions, which are causing global warming and climate change with increasingly severe consequences on our planet and society: in 2023 alone, extreme weather events linked to climate change included unprecedented heatwaves across Europe, America and Asia, deadly wildfires in Canada, Hawaii and Greece, devasting rainfall and flooding in India, Italy and Libya, to name a few.

There is an urgent need for action to combat climate change and its impacts. As the UN often reminds us: “Every fraction of a degree matters: to vulnerable communities, to ecosystems, and to every one of us.” At Renantis we believe that our contribution should go beyond the production of renewable energy. For this reason, we have set up the Renantis Community Climate Action Fund to support the communities around our norwegian, swedish and finnish wind farms to address the wider challenges associated with climate change.

Do you or a group in your community have an idea for an initiative that could help address climate change or mitigate its impact? Tell us about it for the chance to receive up to € 10,000 (equivalent to SEK 115,500 / NOK 115,800) to deliver community-led climate actions that can have a positive impact for the planet and future generations.

We’re looking for innovative projects from a wide range of topics, including but not limited to:

  • Decarbonisation projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by using renewable energy sources or optimising energy consumption (please let us know if they will be delivered in deprived areas where they can also support with the cost of living crisis and energy costs)
  • Community energy
  • Climate change mitigation projects and risk management of extreme weather events
  • Social activities related to climate change that can increase climate change awareness and contribute to the community’s social life
  • Digitisation projects that can support the community taking climate action or in case of extreme climate events
  • Community networking and/or events allowing communities to share best practices on climate change actions – either internally within the community or amongst different communities

The winning ideas have to be practical, demonstrate positive impact and be up and running in 2024. Tell us about your idea in the application form here, and send it to us with any supporting information by Friday 15 December.

The successful winners will be announced in January 2024

How to apply

  1. Each local community associated to our renewable energy plants can enter up to two different projects using the form below. The projects can be run by other organisations in your area, please feel free to share the details with anyone you think might be interested.

 2. Successful projects should be:

  • located within the geographical area hosting one of our operational renewable energy plants (or a plant that is going to be operational soon)
  • up and running in 2024
  • supported by the local community
  • able to demonstrate positive impact in tackling climate change or mitigating its impact
  • be able to be evaluated to demonstrate they have achieved their objectives

3. Up to 80% of the total cost of successful projects (i.e. up to € 10,000, equivalent to SEK 115,500 / NOK 115,800) will be covered by Renantis. Please outline in your application how you intend to provide the 20% of matched funding.

If you need any more information on how to enter your project, please contact federica.inzoli@renantis.com

Please note that the successful applicants will be asked to provide information on a regular basis that will allow us to demonstrate the importance of providing extra support for the local communities:

  • An overview of the actions taken
  • Case studies and pictures showing how the funding is helping your community taking climate action
  • Any results achieved by the project
